A FLOCK OF PINK FLAMINGOS MIGRATE TO KENNEBEC SAVINGS BANK

mAY 8, 2009: AUGUSTA, ME - Kennebec Savings Bank’s main office lawn became the destination of a flock of two dozen pink flamingos yesterday morning.  The culprit(s) and the reasoning behind this quirky prank have yet to be determined by authorities.

The flamingos are scattered around the signature green Kennebec Savings Bank sign surrounded by blossoming tulips on the rotary in Augusta.  President and CEO of Kennebec Savings Bank, Mark Johnston, spoke about the unexpected lawn ornaments, “We were all surprised when we looked out the Bank’s windows to view the incredible sight of these pink feathered friends vacationing outside.  Our curiosity has been heightened and though the guilty party caused no vandalism to the Bank’s property, we will find the source to identify the logic behind this incident.”  Drivers passing the Bank are also wondering the meaning of these attention-grabbing birds.

Live on local radio station 92 Moose at 7:30 am this morning, Mark Johnston voiced his inquisitiveness of the significance of the Bank’s new visitors.  His interview allowed listeners to hear about this strange happening and prompt any witnesses to come forward.

Legendary Maine Humorist, Gary Crocker, denied any involvement with this recent bird scam on the radio this morning, as well.  Crocker, who is holding a pink flamingo on the main page of his personal website, www.garycrocker.com, seemed a suspicious and likely suspect.  This crowd pleasing character is, in fact, innocent.

Coincidentally, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, International Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated worldwide tomorrow.  Occurring on the second Saturday of May each year, International Migratory Bird Day is dedicated to journeying birds, their picturesque beauty, and unique talents.  The day is strategically celebrated to correspond with the time of migrating birds.

International Migratory Bird Day’s intent is also to become a year-long effort to create understanding and develop care for threatened birds in their natural environments.  For additional information on International Migratory Bird Day or resources to offer help to these animals, please visit www.birdday.org.

Though the pink flamingos are temporarily safe on the Kennebec Savings Bank lawn, they are not in their most favorable setting.  Therefore, the perpetrator of this act must soon be identified and the motive revealed.

Kennebec Savings Bank is a $672 million state-chartered mutual savings bank, headquartered in Augusta.  With 81 employees, and offices located in Waterville and Winthrop, Kennebec Savings Bank prides itself on being the bank where “the feeling is mutual.
